Cranberry Fruit Dip is what happens to my leftover homemade cranberry sauce. Fluffy cream cheese, real whipped cream and a big spoonful of cranberry sauce get whipped into a sweet, pretty pink dip for fresh fruit.

As if you needed further reason to make even more fresh homemade cranberry sauce during the holidays, too! I’m the kind of cook who doesn’t like to run out of anything I’m serving, so I always make more than enough. I make my cranberry sauce every year, so there’s always some left over, and this dip is the tastiest way I know to use it up.

And no Cool Whip here. Most cranberry dips are cream cheese, canned cranberry sauce and a tub of whipped topping. Mine uses real heavy cream, whipped right in the bowl.

Cranberry Fruit Dip at a Glance

  • What it is: a sweet, fluffy fruit dip made with cream cheese, real whipped cream, powdered sugar and cranberry sauce.
  • Why make it: it turns leftover homemade cranberry sauce into a holiday appetizer.
  • Time: about 15 minutes, no cooking.
  • Ingredients: just four.
  • Method: whip the cream, whip the cream cheese and sugar, combine, then fold in the cranberry sauce.
  • Texture and flavor: light and fluffy, sweet with a little cranberry tartness.
  • Quick tip: using store-bought sauce? Buy whole berry, not jellied.

Why You’ll Love This Cranberry Fruit Dip

Festive? Check. Pretty? Check. Sweet and delicious? Double check. Seriously, appetizer recipes don’t get much easier than throwing a few ingredients into a mixing bowl and whipping them up until silky smooth.

This, along with my Cranberry Brie Bites, is one of my favorite holiday appetizers!

  • Four ingredients, no cooking. It’s ready in about 15 minutes.
  • Holiday color with no food coloring. Half a cup of cranberry sauce turns the whole bowl pink.

What You’ll Need

  • Cream cheese: from a block, softened to room temperature.
  • Heavy cream: real heavy whipping cream. It gets whipped first, and that’s what keeps the dip light.
  • Confectioners sugar: also called powdered sugar. It sweetens the dip and dissolves right into the cream cheese.
  • Cranberry sauce: homemade is best. If you buy it, get whole berry cranberry sauce, not jellied. Jellied sauce is set firm and has no berries, so it won’t fold into the dip the same way or give it those little bits of cranberry.

How to Make Cranberry Fruit Dip Step-by-Step

Whip the cream and the cream cheese separately. Honestly, it tastes about the same if you mix everything in one bowl, which is how I first made it (you can spot little bits of cream cheese in my photos). Whipping them separately just makes the dip smoother and prettier.

Step 1: Whip the cream

Beat the heavy cream until it holds soft peaks, not stiff ones. Set it aside.

Step 2: Whip the cream cheese

In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese by itself until it’s really fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl.

Step 3: Add the confectioners sugar

Beat the confectioners sugar into the cream cheese until it’s smooth.

PRO TIP: Stop whipping the cream at soft peaks, when the tips flop over as you lift the beaters. It keeps whipping a little more when you mix it into the cream cheese.

Step 4: Mix in the whipped cream

Add the whipped cream and mix well until it’s one smooth mixture.

Step 5: Fold in the cranberry sauce

Gently fold in the cranberry sauce with a spatula. Spoon the dip into a bowl and serve it with fruit.

Common Cranberry Fruit Dip Problems To Avoid

  • Little lumps of cream cheese: the cream cheese was too cold, or it went in with everything else. Soften it first and whip it on its own until it’s fluffy.
  • Grainy dip: the cream was whipped too stiff. Stop at soft peaks.
  • Runny or flat dip: the cream wasn’t whipped enough, or the dip was stirred hard after the cranberry sauce went in. Fold the sauce in gently, and whip the cream until the beaters leave trails.

What to Serve with Cranberry Fruit Dip

Fruit, of course! But what kind of fruit? Well, that depends entirely on the type of fruit dip you’re serving. For example, if you serve my cheesecake fruit dip, it is very soft and fluffy, so it goes great with berries. But, if you choose a fruit dip that isn’t as easy to dip into without a serving knife like my chocolate fruit dip, then a harder fruit like an apple or a pear works best.

This cranberry dip is soft, so almost anything works. Pear slices (like in my photos), apple wedges, strawberries and grapes are my favorites.

You can also serve your cream cheese fruit dip with cookies. I think biscotti are fabulous with appetizers like this cranberry fruit dip, and your party guests will love it too. Gingerbread crinkle cookies are great for dipping, too.

And if you’re looking to set out a trio of fruit dips, everyone loves my pumpkin fruit dip and my cream cheese peanut butter dip for apples and pretzels. My roundup of cream cheese fruit dip recipes has even more, and a bowl of this dip fits right on a holiday charcuterie board.

Making Ahead and Storing

  • Make ahead: make it up to 1 day ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. If it settles, put it back in the mixer for a few seconds to fluff it up again.
  • Leftovers: keep them covered in the fridge and eat them within 1 day. That’s how long the USDA’s FoodKeeper gives sweetened whipped cream.
  • At a party: don’t leave it out for more than 2 hours (1 hour if it’s above 90°F). Set out half and keep the rest in the fridge to refill the bowl.
  • Freezing: not recommended. Cream cheese doesn’t freeze well.

Cranberry Fruit Dip FAQs

Here are the answers to the questions people ask most about cranberry dip.

Can I use Cool Whip instead of heavy cream?

Yes, it works, but I don’t use it. One cup of heavy cream whips up to about 2 cups, so use about 2 cups of thawed whipped topping and skip Step 1. Whipped topping is already sweet, so taste before you add all the powdered sugar.

Can I make it with fresh cranberries?

Not raw. Fresh cranberries are hard and very tart, so cook them into cranberry sauce first and let it cool before you fold it in.

Can I spread it on a bagel?

Yes. It’s basically sweetened whipped cream cheese, so it’s good on a toasted bagel or on graham crackers.

Can I double the recipe?

Yes. Use bigger bowls so the cream has room to whip.
