Why this recipe works:

You don’t really need a recipe to know how to make baked grapefruit. You basically put brown sugar on the grapefruit and broil it until nicely melted and the fruit is warmed through.

The recipe, itself, is extremely easy.

Ever had grilled pineapple? The heat makes the fruit extra juicy and brings out the natural sweetness. Same thing happens when you broil grapefruit. The brown sugar on top is just a bonus!

Here’s how to make it:

  1. Start by cutting a large grapefruit in half. To make it easier to eat, cut the segments away from the pith and in between the membranes with a small pairing knife. pink grapefruit cut in half
  2. Sprinkle each half with a tablespoon of golden brown sugar.
  3. Set the sugar covered grapefruit halves on a baking sheet and broil for about 5 minutes until the fruit is warm and the sugar is bubbling.

Quick tips for perfect results:

  • The recipe is for one grapefruit but you can easily make this recipe for a crowd. It is a fantastic addition to any brunch.
  • The brown sugar is optional. Although I used to cover my grapefruit with a disgusting amount of sugar when I was a kid, our entire family eats it plain now. You can certainly broil the plain grapefruit and it will still be delicious. The brown sugar just makes it a treat.
  • You may need to adjust the height of your oven rack to ensure the grapefruit gets heated through without burning the brown sugar on top.
  • You can use granulated sugar instead of brown sugar, but I found the brown sugar adds more of a rich caramel flavor.

I love citrus and will often use grapefruit, lemons, limes, and oranges in all kinds of recipes. Here are just a few suggestions if you love citrus too.
