I’m a huge fan of champagne. Its one of those drinks that tastes wonderful and gives me quite the buzz. It took me a few years spanning from my early 20s to my early 30s, but I’ve finally perfected the rate and volume at which I can consume champagne to reap the maximum benefit without any of the horrible side effects. There’s another life goal I can scratch off the list!

You know I’m a fan of pomegranates. Its one of those wondrous foods that I completely adore, yet didn’t try until I was well into my adulthood. You know, like beets. I’m not sure I had even heard of a pomegranate, as a matter of fact, until I had been adulting for a good decade or so. Then, once I saw one, it probably took a few years before I found the courage to actually crack one open and extract the seeds.

Now everyone knows mimosas are a classic drink, and I enjoy them morning, noon, and night. Who says they have to be a breakfast drink? Not me. But a basic OJ + champagne cocktail is boring, if you ask me. My secret ingredient to an amazing mimosa is a splash of Grand Marnier. Then, you can totally play around with your creativity and make cocktails like this one. Why not try a grapefruit mimosa?  That’s another favorite.

The best part about this drink, in my opinion, are the pomegranate seeds soaking on top. If you ask me, a bowl of fresh pomegranate seeds soaking in champagne should be considered a complete meal.

Fruity, tart, and sparkling cocktails are always so refreshing and this Cranberry Fizz, spiked with vodka, is an easy drink you’re sure to love.I’m a huge fan of easy cocktails. When I go to a fancy bar and look at the amazing combinations of flavors and bizarre concoctions they come up with, I realize the drinks I make at home simply can’t compare. What I do make, however, are simple drinks that taste good. What more do you need, really?

Fruity, tart, and sparkling cocktails are always so refreshing and this Cranberry Fizz, spiked with vodka, is an easy drink you’re sure to love. If you want a fancy drink with black walnut bitters and habanero infused absinthe, you’re best bet is to visit any of the trendy bars in Portland, Oregon. You’ll never see me come up with something crazy like that. What you will see are drinks like this Cranberry Fizz.

Fruity, tart, and sparkling cocktails are always so refreshing and this Cranberry Fizz, spiked with vodka, is an easy drink you’re sure to love. This tart and tasty cocktail starts with 100% cranberry juice, fresh orange juice, and sugar. I basically make a simple syrup by cooking these things together, but I take it a step farther and continue cooking until I end up with a thick ruby red syrup.

Fruity, tart, and sparkling cocktails are always so refreshing and this Cranberry Fizz, spiked with vodka, is an easy drink you’re sure to love. You can turn this into a non-alcoholic mocktail like I did for my kids by just mixing this syrup with sparkling water, or in my case sparkling cranberry lime water. That, all by itself, is downright delicious. If you’re looking to make a cocktail, however, an ice cold shot of vodka does the trick.

Fruity, tart, and sparkling cocktails are always so refreshing and this Cranberry Fizz, spiked with vodka, is an easy drink you’re sure to love.Just to make this drink extra pretty, I love freezing fresh cranberries in ice cubes. When you add a few cranberries and only fill the ice cubes wells half way up and let them freeze, you can top them with more water and freeze in order to get the cranberries to get frozen in the middle. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. The second August rolls around, I’m all about everything-apple. From the second they are available at the farmers market up until I simply can’t stomach the sight of anything apple related (which usually happens by February or March), I can’t get enough crunchy tart juicy fresh apples, not to mention fresh apple cider, pie, apple brown betty, and even savory dinners with apple. The first time I had hot apple cider out of a crockpot was at a Thanksgiving dinner. The hostess had actually put butter in it. Although I wasn’t a huge fan of the fat that floated to the top, I have to admit there was something lovely about the decadent richness the fat added to that warm fall drink. I much prefer, however, to add a dollop of whipped cream at the end.

This classic fall drink, of course, can be made kid friendly simply by omitting the booze, which is exactly why I don’t add it to the crockpot. That, plus the fact that I wouldn’t want any of the alcohol to burn off! You can really use any kind of liquor you want too – rum, bourbon whiskey, whatever warms our belly. My husband is a whiskey lover so that was my liquor of choice, but feel free to set several choices out for your guests and see what they prefer!

Beer cocktails are a fantastic way to incorporate beer to create tasty new adult beverages. This Citrus Beer Sangria that is sweet, bubbly, and refreshing!

Guess what? I’m  not a real fan of beer. I’ve always wanted to be because its such a social drink. What do you order when you go out with friends? Beer. What do you drink when you’re watching the game? Beer. What do you see when you open the cooler? Beer. As many times as I’ve tried to like it, however, I’ve never enjoyed it as much as I want to.

Now, this is a real shame, especially since I live in the Pacific Northwest where there are more micro breweries per capita than anywhere else in the country. I don’t actually know this to be completely factual, but I’d be willing to make that claim in a bet.

I have found something beer related that I absolutely love, though: the beer cocktail. I saw an article at the end of last year that talked about the up and coming food trends and beer cocktails was on the top of the list. After making this Citrus Beer Sangria, I have a new found love for beer.

Beer cocktails are a fantastic way to incorporate beer to create tasty new adult beverages. This Citrus Beer Sangria that is sweet, bubbly, and refreshing!

To me, most beers are rather bitter. Just like I can’t drink hard alcohol on its own, I absolutely love it when its mixed into a wonderful cocktail creation. Beer is no different. The trick is finding complimentary flavors to balance out the bitter, earthy, hop flavor of a good beer.

Traditional sangria combines fresh fruit muddled with hard alcohol and is later topped with something like wine. I followed the same basic principals with this recipe but chose grapefruit, orange, lemon and lime (all citrus) as my fruit, used vodka as my hard alcohol, and incorporated pineapple juice to add some sweet to all the tartness of fruit. Don’t get me wrong – this alone would have made a tasty treat. Once that beer was added, however, it took the cocktail to a whole new level. There were so many different flavors and notes that danced around with each taste.

I’m especially fond of pitcher drinks because they’re so easy when entertaining a crowd. Plus, have you ever seen a prettier drink than this one with all that fruit swimming around? I think we can all agree that the very best part of a good sangria is eating the fruit at the end. Yum!

I love tropical drinks. Wanna know why? Aside from the fact that they taste amazing, they completely transport me to a tropical island, even if its just for the few minutes it takes for me to guzzle down said drink. I had a pineapple that needed to be used up along with a lonely little lemon. Sure, I could have just sliced up the pineapple and called it good, but where’s the fun in that? Alas, the poor little pineapple and lemon looked rather bland all by their lonesome.

Enter one shot of whiskey. That shot glass only has an ounce of whiskey in it and I use a full 1.5 ounces in this cocktail. I like to round up. Now, doesn’t this picture below look more complete? Canned pineapple juice would work perfectly well. In fact, I highly recommend just buying juice. Is that what I did? Nope. I had the grand idea of juicing the fresh pineapple. Did it taste better? Probably. Was it worth the work and the mess it created? Probably not. Just buy the juice.

This tart Hawaiian Stone Sour made with whiskey and pineapple juice will make your mouth pucker while you daydream about relaxing on a tropical beach.

I’m not a huge whiskey fan, to be completely honest. I don’t know how, but my husband can drink it straight – along with just about any other type of booze. There is something, however, about a whiskey sour that I just love. If its made properly, there’s just the right amount of sweet versus tart and they perfectly compliment the take-your-breath-away intensity of the whiskey.

Tequila Pina Colada

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Altos Tequila. All opinions are 100% mine.

Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. I have found many passions as I have traveled through life. The first thing that I was totally and utterly passionate about were my kids. I’m sure every parent can relate. The inspired me to learn how to take good quality photos and that passion led to many different avenues that I would have otherwise never taken. But the one passion that has been with me my entire life and only continues to grow is my passion for food. Ever since I can remember I have not only been a lover of eating food, but creating new recipes. I’ve always felt comfortable in the kitchen and take great pride in creating wonderful meals, desserts, and drinks that my friends and family can enjoy. I’ve also found that I’m incredibly passionate about the quality of my ingredients. Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. That is why I was so impressed when I found Altos Tequila Field Notes.  I was inspired not only by the high quality tequila – and oh boy is it good – but also by their story. Altos Tequila was created by two bartenders named Henry Besant and Dre Masso. They realized there were only two categories of tequila; those that were cheap and were guaranteed to make you sick, and those that were expensive, “hand-crafted” and guaranteed to make you poor. You know exactly what I’m talking about, right? After noticing this gap in the market, these two bartenders and Master Distiller Jesus Hernandez created Olmeca Altos – hand crafted, authentically produced, quality tequila at a competitive price point. Very similar to my love of food and high quality ingredients, they took what they were passionate about and created something wonderful that we can all enjoy! Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. Now, I know a typical Pina Colada is made with rum but I personally love tequila – silver tequila at that – and I really wanted a tequila-ized pina colada. In my opinion, one cannot fully enjoy tequila without a hefty squeeze of lime so I was sure to include that with a touch of simple syrup to sweeten it up. Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. The combination of these tropical flavors with a hint of tart from the lime and the smooth finish of the tequila absolutely hit the spot. Next time you’re in the mood for a blended drink, this is the one you should try! Shake up your traditional drink with this Tequila Pina Colada made with silver tequila, coconut cream, fresh pineapple, plus pineapple and lime juice. If you’ve never tried Altos Tequila, I highly encourage you to add a bottle to your home bar. Be sure to check them out on Altos Tequila Twitter and Altos Tequila Instagram!

Have you ever tried to grow mint in your garden? I’m a firm believer that the secret to everlasting life lies within the DNA of mint. You know what I mean if you’ve ever planted it alongside other herbs, only to find that it spreads and grows beyond your wildest dreams, and year after year it comes back no matter how many times you rip it out of the ground. I have taken to growing my mint in pots and that solution simply makes everyone happy.

How to Make Simple Syrup

Share on FacebookPin on PinterestShare on Google+Tweet about this on TwitterShare on YummlyShare on StumbleUponEmail this to someone

If you enjoy making your own delicious cocktails at home, then you must know How to Make Simple Syrup.

If you enjoy making your own delicious cocktails at home, then you must know How to Make Simple Syrup.

I’ve debated for a long while about whether I should write a recipe post on how to make simple syrup because its really quite easy to make and I wasn’t sure it actually required its own post. The determining factor, however, was that I use my simple syrup in tons many recipes and I’ve grown quite weary of explaining the process in every single recipe. So now, I’ll just hyperlink the words “simple syrup” to this post and BAM! – everyone will know how to make it.

If you’ve never made simple syrup before, or don’t even know what it is for that matter, allow me to explain. Simple syrup is basically sugar dissolved in water. The solution is heated to fully dissolve the crystals and then cooled before using and/or storing. It keeps quite well in your refrigerator and lasts even longer if you make it with a stronger concentration of sugar. I’ve always used the 1:1 ratio of sugar:water but you can change that up if your heart desires. Then, just add it to any drink that’s in need of some sweetening!

I’d love to know what your favorite cocktail made with simple syrup is. Me? I love anything fruity that tastes best sipped through a straw under the hot summer sun.

I’ve added some examples of drinks that I’ve made with simple syrup. Just click on the photo and you’ll go to that recipe. Enjoy!

This Cranberry Screwdriver with cranberry vodka, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a splash of Grand Marnier is a delicious and easy to make cocktail.

Its been awhile since I’ve made a cocktail. Too long, if you ask me. I had this wonderful Deep Eddy Cranberry Vodka sitting in my cabinet far too long and it was just begging me to drink it. It really was. This particular vodka is made from real New England cranberries and is all-natural handcrafted vodka from Austin, TX. Next to Portland, OR, the best place in this country you can go for amazing food and spirits would have to be Austin.

This Cranberry Screwdriver with cranberry vodka, freshly squeezed orange juice, and a splash of Grand Marnier is a delicious and easy to make cocktail.

I love a tasty screwdriver, so I thought I should make a festive screwdriver. Its pretty much your standard screwdriver which is vodka + OJ, but this drink was way better than a boring old plain screwdriver.

You can shake this cocktail with ice to really mix it well and get it ice cold, but I’m lazy and usually don’t want to clean an extra dish if I don’t have to, so I just added all the ingredients to the glass.

Start with a couple ounces of the cranberry vodka and top it off with some fresh squeezed orange juice. I happened to have some tasty cara cara oranges and juicing two of them gave me exactly the amount I needed. A little splash of Grand Marnier really finishes this lip smacking drink off.
